In February 1917 there appeared new English plane in the air of the
Western Front – Sopwith Triplane.
German pilots were impressed by the new Britain 's
airplane as it was superior to all the adopted German planes by all main
characteristics.
During Anthony Fokker's visit of Jasta 11 Richthofen himself was very critical on the current situation.
He described in details the recent fight with one of the new British planes
when he managed to escape being defeated in his Albatros
D.III. Under the impression from the fight Richthofen
asked Fokker to build a rival machine. Fokker was conveyed to one of the front
observation points to watch British Triplanes in
action. He also was allowed to examine one of the captured examples before it
was sent for research in Adlershof.
As a result of his research Fokker concluded that a new potent weapon in
hands of German pilots is just a matter of time.
After he returned to Schwerin , Fokker ordered Platz (chief
designer of the company) to redesign V.4 prototype from biplane to triplane. Since Fokker didn't take any notes while
examining the trophy triplane all technical details
of the new airplane were vague. As a result on July 7 th Fokker launched the project of a new plane that
was initially designed to be triplane – V.5, which is
considered the first prototype of Fokker Triplane.
The early test flights performed by Fokker on V.4 showed its excellent
flight characteristics. The Plane was also flown by several combat pilots who
visited Schwerin . One of them was Werner Voss who was deeply impressed by
the plane and in his turn reported about it to Richthofen.
But after all it was decided to concentrate on V.5 type. On 28 th of August 1917 the first two
preproduction machines (V.5) were given to Jasta 11
and Jasta 10 for combat testing and already on the 1 st of September the first victory was gained on Fokker Triplane. That day Manfred von Richthofen brought down British RE 8 whose gunner didn't
even fire in return as he probably mistaken it for a British airplane.
Pilots referred to Fokker Triplane as a exceptionally maneuverable plane, due to thick wing section
it could climb rapidly and all in all had perfect flight characteristics that
only Sopwith Camel could argue. The shortcoming of
the plane was that only highly experienced pilots could use its full potential.
In the hands of an ace Dr.I was a lethal weapon
but unfortunately by the time triplanes appeared in
combat in sufficient numbers the very conception of a plane became outdated as
more advanced British and French machines entered combat. As the altitude
increased flight characteristics of the plane became significantly worse,
flight speed became insufficient to compete with new enemy planes.
As a result there were a total of 320 machines built, with the maximum
number of planes in frontline squadrons reached in April-May 1918 –
approximately 150 planes in 17 squadrons. By September 1918 frontline squadrons
had only 69 planes of this type left.
